May 29, 2006 - The strategic use of state of the art technology to help deliver healthcare services to First Nations makes this a time to shine for the Inter Tribal Health Authority of Nanaimo, BC.

Today marked the official launch of an unique health management service for the ITHA's 28 member First Nations.

A visiting Maori Elder, Dr. Merimeri Penfold will assist in the launch, as she and her son James, a technology specialist, will share the New Zealand community project experiences and lessons learned.

The first day of the launch will provide details on the project with facilitators and breakout groups, while day two will feature an Elders' gathering at the Nanoose First Nation, with a display of distinct First Nations cultures of Vancouver Island.

Singing and dancing will be provided by Coast Salish drummers and singers from the Cowichan Tribes and Nanoose, and Nuu-chah-nulth youngsters will be performing The Animal Kingdome - portraying a Nuu-chah-nulth Origin Story.

Regarding the Health Project that they are celebrating - Inter Tribal Health Authority and the health software company, Intrahealth Canada Limited signed an Alliance Agreement that involves the delivery and coordination of a state-of-the-art health information system that was developed in New Zealand and has proven itself with the Maori people.

ITHA Executive Director, Terry Fox (pictured below) called it, "the beginning of a new era in First Nations health service management . . .This will allow ITHA to prioritize services according to the particular needs of local communities".

This initiative will allow Inter Tribal Health Authority to manage anonymous population health data and to monitor health status and needs of its member First Nations in a way that they've not been able to before.

The software is designed to link all points-of-care participants electronically, for example hospitals, physicians, community health nurses, mental health workers, home care and others, so that potentially they can share patient records and information. It even can allow patients to access their records, make appointments and interface with healthcare professionals.

Inter Tribal Health Authority (ITHA) provides health services to 28 member First Nations including, the management of non insured health benefits, the delivery of second and third level health services, health nursing services, the facilitation of management of health transfers, and the facilitation of healing for victims of residential schools and their families.

ITHA also manages Vancouver Island First Nations e-Health
